Shuttle vs. Needle Tatting

Well this always seems to be an issue not really an issue but some people feel that if you dont shuttle tat you arent REALLY tatting... To me its about the same, shuttle is a bit harder for me because my stitching is never right...

SO to prove a point I tatted a little something with needle and shuttle
Can you tell the difference??

these were both resized at a different percentage so you cant cheat LOL
In my opinion they look the same You can make needle tatting look exactly like shuttle tatting...

I"m always amazed at how quickly needle tatters are able to complete a project! I tried needle tatting one time, and I couldn't get the hang of it. I think it's because it took me so long to learn how to shuttle tat. I have shuttle tatting so ingrained in my brain, there's no way I can conceive of it being done a different way. I say, if you're making beautiful lace, who cares which tools you use?

Yep, they both look like tatting to me.

Thanks!! I love doing both but prefer the needle probably because its what I taught myself to tat with... I agree Miranda they both look like tatting, yes sometimes the shuttle is different looking because of the maneuverability of the shuttle to the needle but in the end its ALL TATTING!! :)

I can do both and, for me, the pattern usually determines which method I use. I think needle tatting is faster but I like the way the shuttle moves back and forth making the stitches.

I used to prefer needle at one point as well. I guess I like how shuttle tatting is tighter. But they both have their uses for sure.

I wanna play, here! I am a shuttle tatter - though only for just over a year.... so here is my guess. I think the shuttle is the lower picture....
To me, it looks more like my tatting! So, how does this fit with your experiment? I am curious!

I love your thread color with the purples and plum looking colors. What colorway is that?

Sherry its not really a colorway it was merely experimental I had some purple and added black to it to make it deeper and it worked...

My experiment was the fact that you cant really tell much of a difference I have been told many times that needle tatting is not REAL tatting. When in fact it is... I just was trying to make a little point and you are correct the botttom one is the shuttle :) Great eye!!
